Terminal Group Configuration Wizard

A major change in ThinManager 3.0 is the ability to nest Terminal Groups, creating a multi-level hierarchy for organization. This expands the Terminal Group functionality:

• Groups can be nested within groups, providing multiple levels of organization.
• All Group Settings now use a forced inheritance because of the new nested Groups in ThinManager 3.0. Once a setting has been selected as a group property, every terminal group and terminal beneath it will use that setting.
• Group Settings will be designated on the Configuration and Modules tabs of ThinManager with the Group icon of two blue monitors.

Note: A Terminal Group is a group of Terminals that can be managed together or share a common configuration. This was just “Group” in ThinManager 2.x but is now referred to as a Terminal Group to distinguish it from Terminal Server Groups, Windows User Groups, ThinManager Security Groups, and TermSecure User Groups.

Any Terminal Group setting is passed to terminals that are members of the Terminal Group. In the past ThinManager 2.X had a single-level hierarchy so terminals could have the Group settings overriden and individualized. Because ThinManager 3.0 has multi-level nesting of groups, a Group Setting can not be overriden at the terminal.

Terminal Groups can contain other Terminal Groups and terminals, as shown in the illustration.

Terminal Group Wizard

The Group Configuration Wizard can be launched by selecting Edit>Add Terminal Group or by or right clicking on the Terminals branch in the tree and selecting Add Group.

The Group Configuration Wizard is similar to the Terminal Configuration Wizard except that there are Group Setting checkboxes at each parameter.

Selecting the Group Setting checkbox in the Group Configuration Wizard will force that setting to be inherited by nested sub-groups and member terminals. This is a significant difference from previous versions of ThinManager that allowed any Group Setting to be un-selected and individually configured for a terminal.

Group Settings

This example shows variations in the use of four Group Settings on the Terminal Group Options page of a nested group.

1. Terminal Replacement was configured in the parent group and cannot be changed in this child group. This setting was set as checked.
2. Terminal Schedulewas configured in the parent group and cannot be changed in this child group. This setting was set as checked.
3. Terminal Effects is selected as a Group Setting for this Terminal Group. It will be grayed out in child groups and member terminals.
4. Shadowing Group Setting is unselected, making it available to be set for child groups and member terminals.

The Group Settings of any sub-group or terminal will be grayed out to prevent changes if the group setting is selected on the parent. Changes need to be made at the Group level.
