How Do I? ...FAQ

Install ThinManager?

A) See ThinManager Installation

License ThinManager?

A) See ThinManager Licensing

Know a terminal will work with ThinManager?

A) Order ThinManager Ready Thin Clients from a ACP distributor (click here to find a distributor). Look for the ThinManager Ready sticker, like the one in the left side of the header, on the hardware.

Add a terminal?

A) There are two methods, the Create New Terminal method and the Replacement method.

In the Create New Terminal Method you point the new hardware to the ThinManager Server. When the Terminal Replacement Screen is shown, select Create New Terminal from the list. The Terminal Configuration Wizard will launch in ThinManager on the ThinManager Server. Configure the new hardware using that wizard.

In the Replacement Method you pre-create the thin client's configuration using the Terminal Configuration Wizard in ThinManager on the ThinManager Server. When the thin client is pointed to the ThinManager Server, the Terminal Replacement Screen will be shown. Select the new thin client by name from the list and the configuration will be applied to the new hardware.

Configure a terminal?

A) Terminals are configured using the Terminal Configuration Wizard. See Terminal Configuration for details.

Change the configuration of a terminal?

A) The configuration of a terminal is changed when the terminal configuration is changed in the Terminal Configuration Wizard and the thin client is rebooted to retrieve the new configuration.

Configure and control several terminals at once?

A) Terminals can be configured quicker and controlled together by putting the thin clients into a Group. Select Edit > Add Group from the ThinManager menu bar to launch and run the Group Configuration Wizard. Once the Group settings are chosen, any terminal added to the Group will inherit the Group properties, speeding configuration. Changing a Group property will change it for the entire Group. Any of these properties can be individualized for each thin client, though.

Replace a terminal?

A) See Replacement of Terminals.

Have a terminal find ThinManager?

A) A terminal is pointed to ThinManager in the ACP Boot Loader if using static IPs, or by configuring Option 066 if using DHCP. See Adding a Terminal With Boot Loader 5.01 or DHCP for details.

Have a terminal require a manual login?

A) The Terminal Configuration Wizard has a Login Information page that allows the entering of a user name and password. If this is left blank, the terminal server will prompt the user to manually add a username and password.

Have a terminal login automatically at startup?

A) The Terminal Configuration Wizard has a Login Information page that allows the entering of a user name and password. If this is filled in with a valid user account, ThinManager will pass the information to the terminal server when it asks, automatically logging in the client.

Have a terminal launch a desktop at login?

A) A terminal server session will launch a desktop by default.

Have a terminal launch a specific program at login?

A) The Login Information page of the Terminal Configuration Wizard has an Initial Program field. If this is filled with the path to a program, the session will launch the program instead of the desktop shell.

The Initial Program is the only program that will launch, locking out other unwanted programs. If the Initial Program is closed, the ThinManager Ready thin client will break the connection to the terminal server, then reconnect with the Initial Program re-launched.

Have a terminal launch a several programs at login?

A)There are three methods to launch several programs with different levels of effectiveness.

1) Placing shortcuts to programs in the Startup Folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup) will launch each shortcut program when the user logs onto the terminal server. These can be closed and the desktop will be accessible to the user.

2) To maintain the security that the Initial Program provides by eliminating desktop access and keeping the terminal connected to initial programs, a batch file can be written that launches several programs. The path to the batch file is then entered in the Initial Program field. At login the terminal will launch all of the programs in the batch file but will not start a desktop. Any of the programs started by the batch file can be closed, but when the last one is closed, the terminal will drop the old connection and reconnect to the terminal server, re-launching the programs in the batch file, keeping the terminal constantly connected.

3) The best method is to launch several programs at login is to use MultiSession Terminal Server Groups with AppLink. This allows the thin client to launch several applications, each with their own session on the terminal server. You can switch between sessions with a hot key or navigation bar. If an application is closed on a AppLink group, the session will disconnect and reconnect with the application running.

Switch to a backup terminal server if the main terminal server fails?

A) Every ThinManager has the ability to assign tow or more terminal servers to a terminal so that if one terminal server fails, the thin client will switch to a back up and start a session on the back up terminal server. See Failover for details.

Switch to a backup terminal server with the application running if the main terminal server fails?

A) Instant Failover will start two sessions, one on a primary terminal server and another on a designated backup terminal server, when the terminal is turned on. If the Auto-Login feature and Initial Program functions are used, the backup session will launch the application and will have it ready if the primary terminal server fails.

Add a touch screen?

A) Touch Screens are added by adding the module for that touch screen to a terminal or a Group in the Terminal Configuration Wizard.

Calibrate a touch screen?

A) Highlight the terminal in the ThinManager tree and select Tools > Calibrate Touch Screen from the ThinManager menu bar. A calibration screen will be displayed on the terminal that will need touched to reset the calibration values.

Find the IP address of the client?

A) Highlight the terminal in the ThinManager tree then select the Properties tab. The IP address of the client will be displayed in the Details pane.

Find out how long a client has run?

A) Highlight the terminal in the ThinManager tree then select the Properties tab. The Uptime of the client will be displayed in the Details pane.

See what is running on a terminal?

There are two methods of seeing what is running on a terminal:

1) You can see the processes of the session by expanding the tree under the terminal to show what terminal server the thin client is connected to in the ThinManager tree. Select the Processes tab to display the processes running on the terminal server for that terminal in the Details pane.

2) Shadowing will show what is actually running on a terminal and being displayed on the thin client. Highlight the terminal in the ThinManager tree then select the Shadow tab. ThinManager will shadow the terminal, showing what is on the thin client screen.

Add a printer?

A) Printers can be added and configured by using the Local Printer Module. See Printing for details.

Balance the load between multiple terminal servers?

A) SmartSession will balance the load between multiple servers when using Terminal Server Groups.

Run applications on different terminal servers?

A) MultiSession allows a terminal to run applications on different terminal servers when using Terminal Server Groups. AppLink adds the Initial Program functionality to MultiSession.

Play sound on a ThinManager Ready thin client?

A) Playing sound on a ThinManager Ready thin client requires:

  1. A ThinManager Ready thin client hardware that has a sound port. Some models have a wiring harness that needs to be plugged into the terminal motherboard to provide the sound port.
  2. The correct sound module for the model of ThinManager Ready thin client added during the Terminal Configuration Wizard. See Sound Modules for details.
  3. A set of amplified speakers plugged into the Line Out port. The line out port is unpowered and needs an amplified speaker.
  4. A Windows 2003 terminal server if using RDP or a terminal server with MetaFrame 1.8 FR1 or better if using ICA.
  5. The Audio Port Mapping enabled on the Client Setting tab of the Terminal Services Connection Properties. See Windows Configuration Tips for details.

Monitor the load of the terminal?

A) Highlight the terminal in the ThinManager tree and select the Properties tab. The Details pane will show Uptime, Load Percentage, Total Memory, and Free Memory, among other properties.

Monitor the load of the terminal server?

A) Highlight the terminal server in the ThinManager tree and select the Graph tab. The Details pane will show the CPU Load Percentage, Memory Usage percentage, and the number of sessions.
